Chapter Seven: Liar

Arthur Sterling lived out in the country to the south of where the Masons lived. He was a quiet man, but very good looking. His office was in the same town where the Masons lived, but he enjoyed his commute. It gave him time to think. And it gave him some separation in his work life, where he was an office manager, and his private life. People at work knew very little about his private life.

Arthur liked checking out the swinger pages on the internet. It was one of the reasons he liked to keep his work life and private life separate. He had made some discrete hook-ups through the websites knowing that the people on there liked their privacy as well. That’s how he came across Charlotte’s post.

He texted the post site asking to set up a date with Carlotta. It was a couple days before he heard back. She would meet him for coffee, and they could see if they had a shared interest in getting together. Arthur tried to pull together as much as he could about Carlotta, but he couldn’t find much. Robert and Charlotte had been very careful not to connect Carlotta to anything with the two of them. In a way, the discretion added to the appeal for Arthur.

She showed up at the coffee shop in tight fitting jeans and a frilly, long sleeve, tan top. He wore, being a work day, a nice black suit with tie. He arrived before she did and stood up to get her chair when she did arrive. She appreciated the gentlemanly gesture.

“Carlotta?” he asked.

She smiled. “It’s actually Charlotte.”

He nodded. “I’m Arthur. It’s nice to meet you. Can I get you a coffee?”

“Thank you. A small mocha if you don’t mind.”

“It’ll be my pleasure. Excuse me just a moment.” He got up and placed the order. She noticed that he was in pretty good shape. He had noticed that she looked very sexy.

He returned with two coffees handing her the mocha. “Here you go.”

“Thank you. So, what do you do?”

He was truthful. “I’m an office manager here in town.”

“Oh, you work here?” She seemed a little unsure.

“I do, but I live south of town. Except for work, I don’t do much here. I generally spend my time at home or over in Braxton.”

Braxton was a small town to the south. It was a good 40 miles away. Charlotte smiled and nodded.

“So, you’re not married?” It was a half question, half statement. Robert and Charlotte’s post had specified unmarried per Charlotte’s requirements.

“No. Never met the right girl.” Arthur didn’t even bat an eye with his lie. He long ago had decided that those on websites like the one he had found Charlotte, aka Carlotta, didn’t need the truth. They needed to hear what they wanted to hear. He determined that it was all immoral, so his lie was no worse than their activity. He really didn’t care what they thought.

“You know I am.” He nodded in response.
